la gonterie-boulouneix

Descriptif

Benedictine priory formerly attached to the abbey of Ligueux, responsible for taking in young women of royal blood. The priory has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1948. Three nuns and a chaplain lived there at the time of the French Revolution. The nuns drew their income from the church. The roofing materials and part of the walls were sold to Sieur Gouzon on 5 November 1809 for 281 pounds. A fountain dedicated to Saint John, the object of a famous pilgrimage, stood close to the priory.
