Château d’Aucors

Descriptif

On a natural defensive site, a first fortress was built in the 11th century, of which only a few traces remain in the rocks. During the Hundred Years’ War, it was occupied by the English, but the Seneschal of Poitou laid siege to it and retook it in 1435. Stone cannonballs weighing 100kg testify that he had to use a mangonel (a type of catapult) to get the garrison to surrender. Once peace had returned, a dwelling was rebuilt on the edge of the cliff and a staircase tower was added around 1500. Ruined and abandoned during the Wars of Religion, it was rebuilt in 1617 by its new owner, Jean de Conan, who framed it with two “pepper-pot” watchtowers. A narrow terrace overlooking the void was added during the reign of Louis XIV.
